From Arms & Uniforms Volume 1: Ancient Egypt to the 18th Century by L & F Funcken (a book I had out on near-permanent loan from Virgina Water Library in the early to mid 70s):
The funny braccae are a bit of a giveaway.
And all the best people have these…

Old military art is much better than this modern crap.
ReplyDeleteI bet he drinks Carling Black Label
At least any inaccuracies by the Funckens can be excused by the scarcity of information availability in the 60s, rather than the AI slop that seems to be taking over YouTube (and if the Yorkshire Gamer has a say, Wargames Illustrated). I wonder how many people painted their Airfix Romans brown as a consequence, though? 🤣
ReplyDeleteThe Funcken's books are still a joy to leaf through. Their "Arms and Uniforms: The Napoleonic Wars" borrowed again and again from our local library (then gladly acquired some years later). Du Garde Peach's books another source of inspiration to the developing 'history buff'! :)
ReplyDeletePlus, not as inaccurate as many have claimed; just like the Airfix figures. The Romans were into leather as much as modern Italian haute couture, as evidenced in D'Amato's "Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier: From Marius to Commodus".
Best wishes, James
I managed to get both volumes of Arms and Uniforms and I still leaf through for inspiration, even if they are a bit ropey! My favourite picture is the Romans charging the Cimbrians, and I still want a legion dressed in green led by a tribune in scarlet.
