Prepping For Easter

No, not stashing tins of soup and loo rolls, but doing all the boring stuff, like priming and bases, before I can start slapping on the colour.

Black! Black! The colour of the night! Mummy locked me in a cupboard and fed me pins!

All this started with a box of WSS Alliance infantry I bought on a whim. I made them up, primed them black then they sat in the loft for a year before I thought “I’m more likely to flog these if they are painted”.  So, I did and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, a year later… I have scores of the bloody things! This will probably be the last phase (it’s my third Marlborough’s Wars starter set) if I can just stop faffing about and umming and arring over 12 or 16 figure infantry units and one or two flags per unit.

Alarmingly, I have more infantry sprues waiting for assembly but I’ve run out of painting sticks!

  1. Well if you are stuck, I'll definitely buy the cannon off you ;)

I used to black undercoat everything, then discovered contrast paints - i do miss black undercoat and three shades though. Having said that, I have more time to watch the news now ...ummm

    1. I actually need three more to complete my cunning plan! Minime likes the contrast paints, but I will stick to black. I just slap paint on now and it hides a multitude of sins. I sit in the conservatory and listen to Greatest Hits Radio with Martin Kemp doing his best Mike Smash impersonation.

  2. Great stuff. Like you and the Duc (dans le passé), I undercoat black (well, Payne's Grey) for the instant shading (and preference for darker painted figs).
We look forward to the painted versions.
    Best wishes, James

    1. I just slap paint on now and - shock! Horror! - I often never bother with correcting mistakes! I actually got the idea of black undercoat from an article in Military Modelling about painting 1/300 tanks. First time I used it ‘in action’ was to paint up scores of US marines for the Staines’ Tarawa participation game (although I used Humbrol Chocolate!). The first figures to get a a black undercoat were some Warrior Prussians for a chap called Ernie Jackson. That was about 40 years ago now!
